  2.     What, then, can we conclude 
  3. about the origins of depth 
  4. perception? We appear to be 
  5. born with the axiomatic 
  6. ΓÇ£assumptionΓÇ¥ that we are 
  7. localized within a three-
  8. dimensional spatial world. 
  9. From the very outset, we 
  10. perceive things as distant from 
  11. ourselves, and from each other, 
  12. their precise location in the 
  13. third dimension being based on 
  14. certain innately given cues. 
  15. But we learn to use additional 
  16. cues and learn to interpret 
  17. given cues with greater 
  18. precision after birth. This point 
  19. of view, while it acknowledges 
  20. the importance of learning, 
  21. avoids the dilemma of 
  22. explaining how depth 
  23. perception could arise in the 
  24. first place if it were entirely a 
  25. matter of learning. Moreover, it 
  26. explains how some cues to 
  27. depth could be acquired: by a 
  28. process of association with 
  29. certain innate cues.
